Nintendo Delays US Switch 2 Pre-Orders Due to New Tariffs
Nintendo has officially delayed the opening of Switch 2 pre-orders in the United States, following the announcement of new tariffs by President Donald Trump earlier this week. The delay was first reported by Polygon.
Pre-orders were originally set to go live on April 9, 2025, following the console’s announcement on April 2. However, in a statement to Engadget, Nintendo said:
“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date.”
Despite the delay, the official launch date of June 5, 2025 remains unchanged.
The Trump administration’s newly announced tariffs target products from countries including Japan, China, and Vietnam — the latter two being major manufacturing hubs for Nintendo’s hardware. Products from China will face a 54% duty, while Vietnamese imports will be taxed at 46%.
In the U.S., the Switch 2 is priced at $450, sparking widespread debate among fans who have expressed concerns over the cost and urged the company to reconsider.
While Nintendo has yet to confirm how the tariffs will affect future availability, one potential outcome is a reduction in US supply if economic conditions remain uncertain.
